This Cereal Box Package Design concept for "LIGHTNING PUFFS" is an idea I came up with while following along a student lesson. The lesson was in creating mockups from scratch using an Isometric Grid. The instructor, Lindsay Marsh, creates a book design in the lesson as part of her Mockup Creation Course for Adobe Photoshop that I use through www.udemy.com. I decided to do a cereal box instead of a book while following along in this lesson.
I used an Isometric Grid as a guide for the box itself and made 3 different layers (Front, Side, & Top). Then I made copies and turned them into smart objects so I could easily edit how each side looks. The logo, mascot, and marshmallows were made in Adobe Illustrator using gradients and 3-D Bevel & Extrude effects. Everything else was done in Photoshop.
The lightning bolts are photoshop brushes. I found a cereal bowl image with a strawberry splashing into the milk and cereal puffs that looked similar to what I envisioned on pexels.com. I edited copies of these "puffs" to make a mixture of red, orange, and yellow "puffs". I mixed in some marshmallows and changed the hue/saturation of them for blue & yellow "bolts". Then I used a mask to blend the bottoms of each cereal shape into the milk and hand painted my own shadows for each shape. The final touches were to paint all the shadows and highlights at the edge of each seam and under the box.
